The beds were empty. The window was wide open, curtains fluttering in the warm summer breeze. Margaret screamed their names, racing through the house and yard in a frantic search. There was no trace of them.

The police were called immediately. Officers scoured the neighborhood, while neighbors reported seeing a dark van idling suspiciously near the Hayes’ home late that night. Tire tracks by the back fence suggested a hurried escape. Despite extensive searches, no evidence surfaced. No belongings, no bodies, no sign of the children.

Rumors spread quickly. Some whispered about kidnappers and illegal adoptions. Others cruelly suggested Margaret herself was involved. Through it all, she stood firm. “My babies are alive.
