What You Need to Know About Food Expiration Dates

Most of the dates stamped on your food were never meant to terrify you into tossing half your fridge. They’re usually about peak taste and texture, not a hard cutoff between safe and deadly. “Best if Used By,” “Use By,” and “Sell By” are largely quality guidelines, not poison warnings. A carton of milk that smells fine, eggs that sink in water, meat that’s been promptly frozen, rice and pasta stored dry, and cans without bulges or rust are often still safe long past their printed dates.

The tragedy is how this confusion feeds a much bigger problem: waste. Perfectly edible food fills landfills while families struggle with grocery bills. Rethinking expiration dates means slowing down before you throw away, trusting your senses, and storing food properly so it lasts. It’s a small shift with huge impact: less waste, less guilt, and more respect for the food you bring home.
