We went hiking with friends. Suddenly, we discovered this on a tree. We looked at it from different angles, but we still couldn’t figure out what it is. Does anyone know what it is?

What we had taken for a parasite or some unknown alien organism turned out to be a Red Triangle Slug (Triboniophorus graeffei), a striking land slug native to Australia’s east coast. Its vivid red triangle marking and strange body shape can easily unsettle anyone who isn’t expecting to see it on a quiet walk through the forest. Up close, it looks almost unreal, like something designed for a sci‑fi movie set.

Yet this odd creature is simply part of the ecosystem, thriving in damp, humid environments and coating itself in thick, sticky mucus for protection. The moment of fear gave way to fascination: instead of a threat, it was a reminder of how wildly creative nature can be. Sometimes the scariest things we stumble upon outdoors are just misunderstood, beautifully strange neighbors sharing the same world.
