Among the items recovered were centuries-old tools, scattered coins, and fragments of what appears to be a handcrafted wooden chest. Experts believe these items may be connected to longstanding theories about 18th-century activity on the island, possibly involving maritime travelers or secretive historical groups.
“This is the kind of moment we’ve been working toward for years,” said Rick Lagina. “It feels like we’ve uncovered an important piece of the puzzle.”
As the team continued their work, they encountered something even more surprising: a sealed underground structure made from an unusual material. Unlike anything previously found on the island, the chamber’s solid walls have so far resisted attempts to breach them.
“We’re potentially looking at an intentionally hidden vault,” said one of the archaeologists on-site. “It was built to last—and possibly to protect something significant.”
