The “Cleanliness Paradox”: Why Showering Less Might Actually Be the Key to Healthier Skin After 65

As we age, our skin stops bouncing back from the abuse we once shrugged off. That comforting blast of hot water strips away what little natural oil is left, leaving behind tightness, itching, and cracks that can invite infection. Dermatologists now quietly recommend two to three showers a week for most people over 65, with simple daily “spot cleaning” of the armpits, groin, and feet instead of full-body scrubbing.

There is also a quieter, more frightening risk: the bathroom itself. Every skipped shower is one less chance to slip, one less dizzy spell from steam and heat, one less climb over a slick tub edge. By choosing lukewarm water, shorter showers, and moisturizing damp skin instead of rubbing it raw, older adults aren’t “letting themselves go.” They’re protecting the body’s last, fragile armor—and reclaiming comfort over ritual.
