This wasn’t just any tree. It had towered in our backyard for what seemed like forever. We never learned its exact age, but by all accounts, it had been there for over a hundred years. The tree’s thick trunk and deep roots were part of our lives: shading us on summer days, holding up the swing we made for our son, and standing as a symbol of strength through every storm.
