New sheets pass through multiple hands, machines, and storage spaces before they ever touch your bed. Along the way, they can pick up dust, excess dyes, and finishing chemicals that make them look smooth on the shelf but harsh on your skin. A single wash with mild detergent is usually enough to rinse away most of these residues, soften the fibers, and help prevent irritation, especially for babies and anyone with sensitive skin or eczema.
That first wash also transforms how the sheets feel. Factory finishes often leave cotton and linen stiff, but laundering lets the fabric relax, becoming softer and more breathable. Washing dark-colored sheets separately helps release extra dye safely, reducing the risk of staining other items. While skipping this step won’t harm most people, taking a few minutes to wash new bedding creates a cleaner, more comfortable sleep environment—and makes your bed feel truly fresh from the very first night.
