One major departure from past papal funerals is the coffin itself. Historically, popes have been laid to rest in three nested coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak. However, true to his humble nature, Pope Francis requested a simple wooden casket for his burial. During the lying-in-state, he will remain in an open coffin — a discontinuity from the tradition of displaying deceased popes on a platform with cushions.
