John Cena Reflects on Skin Cancer Scare and the Habit He Wishes He’d Adopted Sooner

John Cena has opened up about a critical health lesson he learned too late: the importance of protecting his skin. The WWE star and actor revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with skin cancer after a routine dermatologist visit.

During that checkup, a spot was removed from his right pectoral muscle. Later, his doctor called with sobering news—it was cancerous. Cena told People he felt fortunate to have a supportive dermatologist guiding him through the process.

A year later, at a follow-up appointment, another spot near his right shoulder was removed and also tested positive for cancer. “It shows up like a white polka dot on my chest and shoulder,” Cena explained, noting that fans might even notice them during WWE appearances.

The repeated diagnosis was a wake-up call. “That information is sobering,” he told USA Today. “It prompted me to change my life.”

Prior to his diagnosis, Cena admitted he had often neglected his skin, particularly sun protection. He now wishes he’d known earlier how vital sunscreen is. These days, it’s a staple in his daily routine.

Cena has since partnered with Neutrogena to promote its Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 70. He hopes to shift the perception of sunscreen use—especially among men.

“SPF is more commonly associated with beauty, which is why it’s part of many women’s routines,” Cena said. “But men are becoming more conscious of self-care. We just need to normalize it.”

He compared sunscreen use to going to the gym: “You might go to look good, but the real benefits are about health. Sunscreen is the same—it’s simple, like brushing your teeth, but it has long-term value.”

Reflecting on his experience, Cena added, “My perspective on life has changed, but it took some tough news to get there. I don’t want others to go through that, so I’m using my platform to raise awareness.”
