Not every two days, not every four days: how often should you wash your hair, according to a dermatologist?

Healthy-looking hair begins where we often pay the least attention: the scalp. Dermatologists now stress that, for most people, washing three to five times a week is not excessive—it’s ideal. This rhythm clears sebum, sweat, pollution, and styling product buildup that can suffocate follicles, dull lengths, and trigger itching or inflammation. Far from “training” your hair to be less oily, skipping washes often lets grease, odor, and microorganisms accumulate in a warm, closed environment.

The key is not washing less, but washing smart. Fine, oily hair or intense workouts may call for daily or near‑daily cleansing, while thick, curly, or drier hair might do best with the lower end of that range, using gentle shampoos and thorough rinsing. Listening to your scalp—its comfort, smell, and appearance—matters more than rigid rules or myths passed down without evidence.
