My son died in an accident at 16

At his funeral, she thought she was mourning a man who had never truly shared her pain. Then his new wife, trembling and pale, asked to speak with her alone. In a halting voice, she revealed the truth: he had driven to the lake the night their son died and kept going back, every single night, for years. There he left flowers, spoke into the darkness, and wept where no one could see.

When she went to the lake herself, she found a small wooden box hidden in a hollow tree. Inside lay a stack of letters, one for every birthday their son had missed. Some were only a line, others soaked and smudged, all of them filled with raw, aching love. Sitting by the water, she read until the sky went black, feeling anger loosen its grip. Grief, she finally understood, had not divided them; silence had. And in the soft lap of the waves, she forgave the man she had once believed did not care at all.
