Michelle Obama issues direct response to Barack divorce rumors

Michelle Obama has once again spoken out to counter rumors that she and Barack Obama are heading towards divorce.

In recent months there’s been (dubious) speculation suggesting that the Obamas’ marriage is on the rocks, and though there’s been very little in the way of concrete evidence anchoring the rumors with legitimacy, people were always going to want some sort of clarification on the matter.

Fortunately, Michelle is ready to give it to them. The former First Lady previously spoke on the topic during an appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast, stating that “everyone would know” if she and Barack were separating.

But it seems even that wasn’t enough to fully put the matter to bed.

Issuing another direct response to any and all who continue to push the idea that a high-profile divorce is around the corner, Michelle used her time as a guest on NPR’s Wild Card podcast to pour more cold water on the flames of rumor.

The 61-year-old discussed the drastic shift in her life from the White House to how things stand today. Barack and Michelle left the Oval Office in 2017, and though there are a good many people who harbor hopes that Michelle might one day make her own run for the presidency, the couple appear to be content with the lives they now lead away from the centre-stage of US politics.

Speaking on the adjustment, Michelle said: “It takes a second when you start thinking, well ‘can you go here? Can you say this? Can you touch this third rail?’

“You know knowing that even in this phase in our lives when Barack and I say something right or wrong it does get covered, you know? The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage, I mean it’s sort – it’s the apocalypse!”

The 61-year-old also touched upon she and her husband’s perceived lack of activity on social media, telling Wild Card host Rachel Martin: “You just are not going to know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know, and yes, I guess we’re famous but we’re 60 we don’t take selfies!”

She added: “Barack was joking, he’s like, ‘you don’t even take pictures of anything we do’, I was like, ‘I’m not thinking about a picture’.

“So, I think them breaking the habit is as much of an adjustment.”

Michelle and Barack, who met in 1988 while working in a Chicago law firm, share two daughters, Malia and Natasha. Barack made history when he became the first black President of the United States in 2009, and has gone on record in the past to state that the role exacted a toll on his marriage.
