A woman stumbled upon a remarkable find in the forest: a baby feathertail glider named Boop at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors. Boop, weighing under a gram and having ventured out of her mother’s pouch, received dedicated care for her eventual release into the wild. Feathertail gliders are distinctive for their flat tails covered in feather- like hair. Despite adults weighing just 10-15 grams, they have the ability to glide like falling leaves, thanks to skin folds extending from elbow to knee. These tiny possums inhabit trees, nourishing themselves with nectar, pollen, and insects. Their furry, frog-like feet have large pads with serrated grooves, providing an excellent grip on various surfaces
as they climb and glide through the treetops.
Boop’s discovery by the woman was a stroke of luck, as these tiny creatures are incredibly elusive and well-camouflaged in their natural habitat. It was as little as a nail when she discovered it on the ground while walking through the forest. Boop was brought to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors for assessment and care, where she was given the name Boop due to her small size and adorable appearance.
The dedicated team at the wildlife center worked tirelessly to provide Boop with the care she needed to survive and thrive. She was hand-reared, fed a specialized diet, and given plenty of opportunities to exercise and explore in a safe environment. As she grew, Boop’s distinctive features and playful personality charmed everyone who had the privilege of caring for her.
After several months of care and rehabilitation, Boop was deemed ready for release back into the wild. The team at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors carefully selected a suitable location for her release, ensuring that she would have access to the food and resources she needed to thrive. On the day of her release, Boop hesitated for a moment before launching herself into the treetops, her flat tail unfurling as she gracefully glided away.
Watching Boop disappear into the forest was a bittersweet moment for the team that had cared for her. While they were sad to see her go, they knew that she was where she belonged – back in the wild, living the life of a feathertail glider as nature intended.
The story of Boop serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect and preserve the delicate ecosystems that these unique creatures call home. By working together to ensure the survival of species like the feathertail glider, we can help to maintain the balance of our natural world for generations to come.
