A Mexican influencer who was slain by a cartel leader sent a menacing note before she died.
Valeria Marquez died in her own beauty parlour on Tuesday, May 13, when a shooter posing as a delivery man—possibly ‘Doble R’ of the Jalisco Nueva Generacion cartel—burst in and started shooting. The 23-year-old was hit once in the chest and again in the head while livestreaming.
According to the Mexican newspaper El Heraldo, Doble R is the main suspect in the murder investigation. Investigators have stated that there are ‘no specific allegations’ in the case at this time.
Prior to the catastrophe, the two had been intimately involved for some months, but Valeria seemed to know that her time was running out.
According to early reports, Doble R may have become violently upset after she received costly gifts from her online followers.
Valeria said during a livestream that an employee named Erika had told her that someone had given an important gift that could not be delivered without her presence, just hours before she was slain inside Blossom Beauty.
The influencer asked her followers during the broadcast, “They came in the morning to get me to give me a gift. Did they want to kill me?”
Additionally, she had previously claimed that her ex-partner had threatened to kill her and warned that he should be held responsible if anything happened to her.
Prosecutors are downplaying conjecture at this early stage due to a local media frenzy.
“In response to media reports that directly point to the alleged perpetrators of the murder of a woman, which occurred yesterday in Zapopan, the State Attorney General’s Office clarifies that, to date, there are no specific allegations in the investigation file,” they said on Wednesday, May 14.
Mexico’s femicide protocol, which is usually followed in cases involving gender-based crime, applies to the ongoing inquiry.
According to the Daily Mail, Doble R’s criminal history allegedly began in 2012 and includes an accused role in the murder of model Daisy Ferrer Arenas, whose body was discovered in a sewage canal in Guadalajara.
In a widely shared video, another influencer, Juan Luis Lagunas, was accused of insulting fellow cartel leader ‘El Mencho’ after he allegedly ordered his assassination.
Valeria is one of many journalists and influencers killed in Mexico as organised crime-related violence increases.
