There is nothing more stunning that nature. It’s ability to transform is so incredible that it never fails to amaze us.
One of nature’s wonders, which we are mesmerized by, is the unusual phenomena known as cross seas or waves that form watery grids.
These grids are created when two sets of wave systems blend at different angles greater than 45 degrees, or when the wind pushes waves in one direction and a swell pushes them in another. However, no matter how beautiful it looks to the eye, these grids can be very dangerous for swimmers and ships.
What lurks beneath the breathtaking sight are currents that can wreck ships and pose a threat to people in the water because the water where these chessboard-like patterns occur is extremely difficult to navigate. Scientists believe cross seas is the reason for many boating accidents and shipwrecks.

In 2010, the European Space Agency said, “The conditions are quite common in the ocean and occur when a windsea and a swell, or two swell systems, coexist.”
It pointed to a 2004 study that showed “a large percentage of ship accidents occurred in crossing sea states.”
Along the western coast of France, at the Isle Rhe, this phenomenon is very common. However, as it is extremely dangerous to enter the water when it occurs, tourist get to witness the water grids from a lighthouse on the western part of the island.

Nature never ceases to amaze us with its stunning transformations. One of the most mesmerizing phenomena is the formation of square waves or cross seas in the ocean. These watery grids are created when two sets of wave systems intersect at angles greater than 45 degrees, or when wind and swell combine to create a unique pattern on the water’s surface.
While the sight of these square waves may be breathtaking, they can be extremely dangerous for swimmers and ships. The currents beneath the surface can wreck ships and pose a serious threat to anyone in the water. Navigating through these chessboard-like patterns is incredibly difficult, and scientists believe that cross seas are responsible for many boating accidents and shipwrecks.
According to the European Space Agency, cross seas are quite common in the ocean, occurring when different wave systems coexist. A study in 2004 found that a large percentage of ship accidents happened in crossing sea states, highlighting the dangers of this natural phenomenon.
One area where cross seas are frequently observed is along the western coast of France, particularly at the Isle Rhe. Tourists visiting the island can witness these incredible water grids from a lighthouse on the western part of the island, as it is far too dangerous to enter the water when cross seas occur.
