If You Open A Watermelon You Find These Cracks In It… Don’t Eat It!

Watermelon is undoubtedly one of the most refreshing and beloved fruits, especially when the temperature soars. It’s juicy, packed with water, vitamins, natural sugars, and provides a quick boost of energy.

Since it’s primarily composed of water, watermelon has a natural diuretic effect, which benefits overall health. When the temperature climbs above 30 degrees, eating a slice can instantly cool you down and leave you feeling refreshed.

This fruit is not only nutritious but also widely available, affordable, and lasts for several days. However, despite its many benefits, there are times when consuming watermelon can be harmful.

Cracks in a Watermelon Are a Warning Sign

Occasionally, you might cut open a watermelon and find large cracks inside. While many people overlook this and eat it anyway, this could actually pose a health risk.

The reason for these cracks lies in a chemical used during cultivation. This substance, known as Forchlorfenuron, is sprayed on watermelons to accelerate their growth.

The biggest concern with Forchlorfenuron is its potential health risks. When ingested, it has been linked to cancer and neurological issues, both of which can be difficult to treat. To prioritize your health, it’s best to avoid consuming watermelon that appears to have unnatural cracks.

Keeping Watermelon Fresh for Longer

If you’re not planning to eat your watermelon immediately after purchase, there are a few steps you can take to keep it fresh for as long as possible.

First, selecting a good watermelon is key. Look for one with a firm rind, a noticeable yellow ground spot, a hefty weight, and a hollow sound when tapped. Additionally, two finger-width stripes are often a sign of good quality.

Once you bring it home, it’s best to leave it whole until you’re ready to eat it. Storing a whole watermelon on the counter, away from direct sunlight, is fine, but keeping it in the fridge can help extend its freshness.

After cutting, watermelon deteriorates quickly. To slow down this process, refrigerate it immediately. Cover the exposed flesh with plastic wrap or place the pieces in an airtight container before storing them in the fridge. Just like with a whole watermelon, keeping cut pieces chilled will help them stay fresh longer.

By following these tips, you can enjoy watermelon at its best while ensuring it remains safe and delicious to eat.
