If you have a certain blood type, you’re MORE likely to develop cancer, research suggests

Researchers following large groups in Iran and beyond are raising unsettling questions about what our blood may be hiding. People with blood types A, B, or AB appear to face a sharply higher risk of stomach cancer, with type A alone linked to a sixfold jump in bowel cancer in one study. Another investigation tied AB blood to a striking rise in liver cancer, while type O seemed to offer modest protection. Scientists suspect differences in how blood groups interact with bacteria and inflammation in the gut, but the biology is far from settled.

Experts also warn that blood type is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Many of these studies are relatively small, and powerful factors like smoking, alcohol, diet, and obesity can easily overshadow any genetic tilt. Still, knowing your blood type is simple, cheap, and often free through donation or medical records. It won’t decide your fate—but it might be the nudge that pushes you toward screening, healthier habits, and earlier conversations with your doctor, especially if you already carry other risks.
