How to Read Chicken Labels and Buy the Best Bird

Most of the language on chicken packaging is designed to soothe you, not inform you. “Natural” sounds wholesome but only means nothing artificial was added after slaughter. “No hormones added” is pure theater; hormones are already illegal in poultry. “Free-range” guarantees a door to the outdoors, not sprawling pastures. “Organic” is the closest thing to a real shortcut: organic feed, no animal by‑products, and required outdoor access. It’s not perfect, but it’s at least anchored to rules instead of vibes.

The one word that truly deserves your suspicion is “enhanced.” That’s code for chicken injected with a saltwater or broth solution, sometimes up to 15% of its weight. You pay meat prices for water and inherit someone else’s brine. Flip the package: the best chicken has one ingredient—chicken. Once you start choosing that, the meat case stops feeling like a test and starts feeling like control.
