Horrifying simulation shows what happens to your body when you vape

The harmful effects of vaping have been brought to life in a chilling simulation, illustrating what happens when chemicals enter the body. While the long-term consequences remain uncertain, vaping-related health concerns continue to grow.

There have been alarming cases, such as a man who had only a one percent chance of survival due to vaping addiction and a 17-year-old who underwent surgery to remove part of her lung after vaping the equivalent of 400 cigarettes per week. Despite limited research, it is known that vaping can be highly addictive, primarily due to nicotine.

The NHS acknowledges that while vapes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they are not without risks. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine along with other substances like propylene glycol, glycerine, and various flavorings.

A recent YouTube video by The Infographics Show visually demonstrates how vaping chemicals affect the lungs, leading to mucus buildup in the alveoli, which are essential for oxygen exchange. The video explains that these chemicals have a “paralytic effect” on the lungs and the cilia, the tiny hair-like structures responsible for clearing out mucus and debris. Once damaged, the cilia take weeks to recover, leaving the body more vulnerable to infections and respiratory issues.

One major concern is the appeal of flavored vapes, which attract young people. A 2023 study found that 4.6% of middle schoolers (ages 11-14) and 10% of high schoolers (ages 14-18) in the U.S. reported using e-cigarettes, totaling around 2.13 million students, according to the CDC.

While research on the long-term effects is still developing, some studies are beginning to reveal potential harm. A recent study published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine compared lung inflammation in e-cigarette users and non-smokers, finding that vaping was linked to inflammatory lung disease. According to Very Well Health, this can lead to wheezing, breathing difficulties, and chest pain.
