Born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw in 1939 in Pound Ridge, New York, Ali grew up surrounded by both creative energy and emotional turmoil. Her parents, Richard and Frances MacGraw, were artists—her mother a commercial artist and her father a painter. Yet beneath the creative surface lay hardship: her father, a man haunted by a difficult past, carried deep emotional wounds from his childhood in an orphanage in Europe. His struggles with anger created an atmosphere of tension in the household, shaping Ali’s sensitivity and resilience from a young age.
