Colon cancer begins in the large intestine, often from tiny abnormal cells that slowly form lesions over time. In the early stages, it may not cause sharp or dramatic pain, which is why it’s so often overlooked. Instead, it shows up as persistent changes: constipation or diarrhea that lasts for weeks, thinner or oddly shaped stools, or the constant feeling that you haven’t fully emptied your bowels. These are easy to blame on stress, diet, or a “sensitive stomach,” but ignoring them can be costly.
Ongoing abdominal discomfort, unexplained fatigue, and weight loss without trying can also be warning signs tied to hidden blood loss or advancing disease. While you cannot control everything, you can lower risks: eat more fiber, fruits, and vegetables, move your body regularly, avoid tobacco and excess alcohol, and keep a healthy weight. Most importantly, do not postpone medical check-ups or screening tests. Listening to your body—and acting early—can truly save your life.
