A wife was in bed with her companion when she heard her husband’s key in the door. “Stay where you are,” she said. “He’s so intoxicated he won’t notice you’re here.”
Sure enough, the husband stumbled into bed, unaware of the situation, but a few moments later, through his haze, he noticed six feet sticking out at the foot of the bed.
He turned to his wife, puzzled. “Hey, there are six feet in this bed. There should only be four. What’s going on?”
“You’re imagining things,” said the wife. “You’re so drunk you miscounted. Get out of bed and try again. You’ll see better from over there.”
The husband got out of bed and counted again. “One, two, three, four. Well, you’re right.”
“There are only four feet in this bed. I must have been mistaken.” With that, he climbed back into bed and promptly fell asleep.
The next morning, the wife and her companion shared a knowing glance, relieved that they had successfully avoided detection. But the husband seemed to have a nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right. He couldn’t shake the feeling that there had been an intruder in their bed.
Throughout the day, the husband’s suspicions grew. He couldn’t concentrate at work, and he found himself constantly replaying the events of the previous night in his mind. Finally, he decided to confront his wife.
That evening, after dinner, the husband sat down with his wife and said, “I can’t shake the feeling that something strange happened last night. I know I saw six feet in our bed, but you convinced me otherwise. Please, tell me the truth.”
The wife hesitated, unsure of how to respond. Finally, she confessed to her husband that he had indeed seen six feet in the bed. She explained that her companion had been visiting, but assured him that nothing inappropriate had occurred.
The husband was initially shocked and hurt by the revelation, but after some time to process the information, he realized that he was partly to blame for the situation. He acknowledged that his excessive drinking had driven his wife to seek companionship elsewhere.
In the end, the couple decided to seek counseling to address their issues and work on rebuilding trust in their relationship. The husband also committed to cutting back on his drinking and being more present in their marriage.
While the situation had been a wake-up call for both parties, it ultimately led to a stronger and more honest relationship between the husband and wife. They learned to communicate better and address their problems head-on, rather than letting them fester in silence.
