Donald Trump’s niece, Mary, has offered a bleak warning with regards to what the future might hold for United States if the president gets his way.
Mary Trump has been an outspoken critic of her uncle for years, breaking away from the usually steadfast family rhetoric and even publishing a memoir about Donald and the rest of the Trump clan, titled Too Much and Never Enough.
Mary, the daughter of Trump’s elder brother, Fred Trump Jr, who died in 1981, went on record after Donald’s return to the Oval Office by declaring that we are living “uniquely dangerous times”.
As per Newsweek, she added that the US would need to “start showing up in different ways from what we might be used to”, implying that her uncle’s second spell as POTUS might mean trouble.
One thing’s for sure, and that’s that Donald Trump has wasted no time at all in implementing widespread changes. Readers will surely agree that there’s never a dull moment when Trump is around, though whether or not that means prosperity of chaos for the US is a conundrum that can’t properly be answered until the end of his second stint.
Perhaps a better question is when exactly will that be?
Sitting presidents in the US are, as per the Constitution, restricted to a maximum of two four-year terms. Yet there have been rumblings recently indicating that Trump may attempt what amounts to nothing short of a coup in bidding to return to office for a third run as president.
Indeed, Trump himself has started to strongly hint that he may seek reelection at the end of his current term – a sobering and, quite frankly, terrifying thought.
Earlier this year, the soon-to-be 79-year-old remarked that there were “loopholes” that could see him stay in office.
“I’d rather not discuss that now, but as you know, there are some loopholes that have been discussed that are well known,” he said.
“But I don’t believe in loopholes. I don’t believe in using loopholes.”
Any such plan would require an immense amount of public support to become remotely viable (or, God forbid, a forceful takeover and the realization of a dictatorship). Already there are critics vehemently lambasting the idea, among them Trump’s own niece, Mary.
A long time critic of Trump, she argued in a recent interview with The Telegraph that the people of the US should be wary of her uncle’s intentions as he may have set his sights on being president “for life”.
Speaking on the possibility of Trump running for a third term – and thereby going against the 22nd Amendment – Mary, a clinical psychologist, said: “That’s what Donald certainly has in mind. It’s not about whether or not he’ll run. It’s about whether or not he’ll leave. It’s more likely that he’ll just say, ‘I’m president for life and I’m not going anywhere’. And he’ll challenge people to get rid of him.
“What enforcement mechanism is there to drag the guy who just lost the election but is in the Oval Office? How do you get rid of him? We don’t know, because we’ve never had this problem. I think he’s willing to challenge that.”
She continued: “America is a deeply broken country and it has been for a long time. Donald is not an anomaly. He is, I think, the logical conclusion to the last 40 years of Republican degradation.”
