Jerry Lewis, comedian and actor, has passed away at 91

Jerry Lewis, famous comedian and actor who worked with Dean Martin and countless others throughout his storied career, has passed away in Las Vegas at the age of 91.

Lewis was adored by his fans and disdained by some others but was an iconic figure in the world of comedy throughout the 20th century. Lewis racked up over 74 acting credits during his lifetime. Over his epic career, Lewis appeared in “The Nutty Professor” and “The Bellboy,” before starting the most famous telethon ever to raise money to fight Muscular Dystrophy.

Lewis was a success in film, television, nightclubs, and on broadway and even spent a time touring universities. When he was at his peak, no other star could match him outside of Frank Sinatra and his own partner Dean Martin.

Lewis was barely in his 20s when he shot to fame with a nightclub act starring Dean Martin as a partner, and after the break-up. Lewis had a successful solo career.

Lewis’ parents were both entertainers who all used the stage name of Lewis. Their real last name was Levitch. They often traveled and it’s believed that their consistent traveling and leaving Lewis at home in the care of a revolving cast of family members contributed to his insecure and often times needy for attention personality.

As a celebrity, Lewis was known for having a “cranky” disposition. He’s largely been off screen over the past few decades except during times promoting annual labor day telethon.

Lewis’ passing was confirmed by a journalist for The Las Vegas Review Journal.’
