A blood blister can look alarming, but in most cases it’s simply your skin’s response to pressure, friction, or a sudden pinch. When tiny blood vessels burst beneath intact skin, the trapped blood forms a dark, raised bubble. Fingers, toes, palms, soles, and even the inside of the mouth are frequent targets—especially with tight shoes, tool use, biting, or dental work. Though often tender, these blisters usually heal on their own within one to two weeks if protected and kept clean.

The real concern begins when blood blisters don’t behave normally. If they appear repeatedly, grow quickly, become extremely painful, or show signs of infection like redness, warmth, pus, or fever, they may be signaling deeper issues such as circulation problems, diabetes, or clotting disorders. Never routinely pop them; the overlying skin is a natural shield against bacteria. When in doubt—especially if healing is slow or blisters appear without clear cause—let a healthcare professional decide whether it’s just a minor nuisance or an important early warning.
